Pep Rally Idea Sitemap
The Author - Lawrence Russell Herkimer, author of "Pep Rally Skits and Stunts," "Champion Cheers" and "Photographically Illustrated Cheer Routines," has been a pioneer in the field of conducting cheerleading clinics throughout the United States. For many years he also has supervised summer cheerleading schools for many colleges and universities.
Foreword - This book is the second of a series of books relating to Cheerleading which the author hopes to make available to cheerleaders and their sponsors, advisors or coaches.
So many requests have been made for an up-to-date Skit and Stunt book that this should be considered one of the most important for cheerleaders.
01. Introduction -
This book of Skits and Stunts for Pep Rallies has been written in the hopes that it will help the many cheerleaders throughout the country to plan better pep rallies and to present something new and different to their student body.
The Pep Rally is one of the most effective activities in moulding school spirit and school loyalty. It a'so instills various elements of sportsmanship into the student body and has a definite part in a secondary school curriculum.
02. Skits(1) - In order to give you some specific information for things to present on your pep assemblies, the following skits are suggested. Many times these skits may be re-arranged somewhat, expanded upon, or shortened to fit your particular situation. Individual creation is always more effective than memorized ideas of others. The group of skits presented here, when properly displayed to your students, and with some "outstanding acting" by the players, will bring many a laugh and add a great deal to your rally.
02. Skits(2) - Assembly Pep Rally Skit requires good singing group. Leading characters to be dressed in school colors. For effectiveness a dance routine can be easily adapted to the words. Mascots to be changed to your schools.
Characters Needed: Six couples, Cathy Coed,
Tommy, Billy, and a narrator. NARRATOR: As she reads the first two lines, Cathy and Billy walk across and stand beside her.
03. Write Your Own - Probably the most successful skits and stunts you use in your Pep Rallies will be those that you create right in your own school. The writer therefore urges you to use the skits and stunts in this book as a guide and change them to your own situations, and also make up some original skits and stunts of your own.
04. Miscellaneous Stunts - Have competition in "RAISING THE SCHOOL SPIRIT" by using two or three "Balloons," "Thermometers" or "Rubber Plants." (Even a person under a sheet, or in a large box, carton, etc., or a small boy may come out of a box or barrel which is labeled "School Spirit"). Place one of these items on one side of the cheering section or auditorium and one on the other and perhaps, if possible, one in the middle.
05. Half Time Stunts - By Keith A. Macdonald, Executive Director, Greater Vallejo Recreation District, California
Herein listed are a few ideas you might like to work out with the approval of your school principal, faculty activity advisor and basketball coach.
1. Tumbling Exhibition by one of your high school gym classes. Gymnastics Exhibit. Parallel Bars Exhibition.
06. Flash Cards - Growing in popularity throughout the country are the use of flash cards by the Pep Squad, Rooting Section and Student Body. Stunts with the cards are very easily worked out and with little or no rehearsal by the students they usually go off very well.
Standard flash card size is 14 x 14 inches. This is the size that is most popular although other sizes of stiff cards may be used. Standard flash cards come in two colors. One color on one side and the other color on the back.
07. Acrobatic Stunts - To pep up your cheering section and entertain them as well, cheerleaders are urged to learn a few acrobatic tricks such as learning to do a flip, cartwheel, handstand, headspring, round-off, back-flip, etc. The safe way to learn to do these tricks is with the use of some sort of safety belt. Two assistants holding two towels around the waist may be used effectively as a safety belt or you can purchase a safety belt with nylon cords especially made for the purpose, for about $14.
08. Pom Poms - To add additional color to cheering sections and especially dance routines when the band is playing, many cheering squads are using pom poms or as they are sometimes called, shakers. They may be purchased ready made or they may be made satisfactorily by the cheerleaders, rally squad or pep squad. Their effects are usually very pleasing and well worth the effort of making them.
09. Decorating Tips - Cheerleaders and Pep Squad members are constantly called upon to conduct, supervise and present all types of programs for the student body. It is also their responsibility to arrange the half time stunts at basketball games, decorate the gymnasium for school dance; conduct the pep rally program, decorate the goal posts, and floats for parades and ever so many other kinds of programs.
